How this calculator works
The calculator checks a simply supported steel W-shape under uniform dead and live load using LRFD per AISC 360-22. The factored load is wᵤ = 1.2w_D + 1.6w_L (ASCE 7-22 load combination 2), producing a required flexural strength of Mᵤ = wᵤL²/8 at midspan. Design strength is ϕMₙ = ϕ_b F_y Z_x with ϕ_b = 0.90, which applies to compact sections with the compression flange continuously braced. Live-load deflection is computed as Δ = 5wL⁴/384EI and compared against the IBC L/360 limit for live load.
Assumptions and limitations
Simply supported single span, uniform load only, compact AISC W-shapes, continuous lateral bracing (L_b = 0), and E = 29,000 ksi. Lateral-torsional buckling, shear, web checks, and point or pattern loading are covered in the full editor templates. This calculator is a design aid — engineering judgment and final responsibility rest with the licensed engineer of record.
Frequently asked questions
Is the calculation verified?
Yes. Every equation in the worksheet is matched against CalcPackage's AISC 360-22 equation registry and dimension-checked on every recomputation. The chain-of-custody rail on the right of the editor records the verification history.
Can I save or print this?
A free account saves versions and exports PDF calc packages; the inputs you've changed on this page carry over automatically when you sign up.
What if my beam has point loads or isn't braced?
The full editor handles point loads, moments, unbraced lengths, and shear checks — describe the problem to the AI scaffolder or start from a template.
